Clinical Effects of Sympathetic Nervous System Overactivity

چکیده
Disturbance of this system occurs because the nerves involved run along the spinal cord in the "sympathetic and parasympathetic chains" (thoraco-lumbar and cranio-sacral respectively) and also because of the effects of unrelieved pain on stress hormones. Bowsher's paper ( [1] ) on central pain describes how most patients with central pain develop "autonomic instability", by which he meant an increase of pain under physical and emotional stress, with cutaneous blood flow and sweating also being affected.

Obesity and adipokines: effects on sympathetic overactivity.
Excess body weight is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, increasing the risk of hypertension, hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia, recognized as the metabolic syndrome. Adipose tissue acts as an endocrine organ by producing various signalling cytokines called adipokines (including leptin, free fatty acids, tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, angiotensinogen an...
متن کاملObesity-Related Metabolic Syndrome: Mechanisms of Sympathetic Overactivity
The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome has increased worldwide over the past few years. Sympathetic nervous system overactivity is a key mechanism leading to hypertension in patients with the metabolic syndrome. Sympathetic activation can be triggered by reflex mechanisms as arterial baroreceptor impairment, by metabolic factors as insulin resistance, and by dysregulated adipokine production ...
متن کاملNonselective Blocking of the Sympathetic Nervous System Decreases Detrusor Overactivity in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
The involuntary dual control systems of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the bladder of awake spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were investigated through simultaneous registrations of intravesical and intraabdominal pressures to observe detrusor overactivity (DO) objectively as a core symptom of an overactive bladder. SHRs (n = 6) showed the features of overactive bladder syndrome dur...
متن کاملOverweight and sympathetic overactivity in black Americans.
A large body of clinical investigation implicates an important role for the sympathetic nervous system in linking obesity with hypertension. However, the experimental support for this hypothesis is derived from strictly white cohorts. The goal of this study was to determine whether being overweight begets sympathetic overactivity in black Americans, the ethnic minority at highest risk for hyper...
متن کاملRelevance of Sympathetic Nervous System Activation in Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome
Sympathetic tone is well recognised as being implicit in cardiovascular control. It is less readily acknowledged that activation of the sympathetic nervous system is integral in energy homeostasis and can exert profound metabolic effects. Accumulating data from animal and human studies suggest that central sympathetic overactivity plays a pivotal role in the aetiology and complications of sever...
